1 9 5 8 - 'É de chuá' / Zé Trindade / Cine Piratininga / Jamboree / 'Cala a boca, Etelvina'

19 January 1958 - Watson Macedo's 1958 musical-comedy 'Alegria de viver' had elements of rock'n'roll the new sensation that had been around since late 1956. Eliana was still supreme now partnered with handsome John Herbert; Annabella, Augusto Cesar and introducing rock'n'roll singer Sergio Murilo.
19 January 1958 - Aloisio Carvalho's 'Maluco por mulher' (Crazy about women) is probably Trindade's first movie in which his name tops the bill. Trindade started as supporting actor-comedian but slowly but surely he became the star of any film in which he appeared. Stardom was inevitable to Zé.
9 February 1958 - Vitor Lima's 'É de chuá' (It is great) is another Herbert Richers production to showcase the duo Ankito & Grande Otelo and their antics. The supporting cast would always bring Renato Restier as the 'bad man'... and ofter actress-former-show-girl Renata Fronzi as some light-hearted femme fatale-cum-scatter-brained-female.
9 March 1958 - French-Italian-German entertainer Caterina Valente in 'Dança, mulheres e música'  (Liebe, Tanza und 1000 Schlager' with Peter Alexander.
9 March 1958 - Sam Newfield's 'She shoulda said No' aka 'Marijuana, the Devil's weed' or even 'The story of Lila Leeds and her exposé of the Marijuana racket' is as 1949 exploitation film that follow the spirit of morality tales such as 1936 films 'Reefer madness' and 'Marihuana'. It was originally produce to capitalize on the arrest of Miss Leeds and Robert Mitchum on a charge of marijuana conspiracy.
30 March 1958 - Carlos Manga's 'De vento em pôpa' in which Oscarito sends up Elvis Presley and the new craze rock'n'roll marvelously. Cyll Farney, Sonia Mamed and Doris Monteiro on supporting roles.
6 April 1958 - Even though Joseph Stalin died on 5 March 1953 and was buried in the Kremlin the ad screams: Is Stalin still alive? in 1957's 'A prisioneira do Kremlin' (Girl in the Kremlin) with Lex Barker & Zsa Zsa Gabor.
6 April 1958 - Herbert Richers could not turning out movie after movie. Even circus clowns like Carequinha & Fred were fair game... 'Com jeito vai' had been a Carnaval song-title and now it becomes a musical-comedy.
28 April 1958 - Vitor Lima's 'Chico Fumaça' - Mazzaropi's 8th triumphant movie in a career that made him the biggest box-office draw in the land. Amancio Mazzaropi's humour was directed to the humblest Brazilian citizen... one could almost call it illiterate humour. One could compare him to a sort-of Pa Kettle's third world simpleton who always comes up on top no matter how dumb he may act.
6 June 1958 - Glorious 1958, the year that should have never ended. That's how Brazilians old enough to have been alive then feel about this marvelous year. Lots of theatres were stilll in existence - let's get 1961 as a milestone - like Cinemundi & Cine Santa Helena at Praça da Sé; Cine Dom Pedro II in the Valley of Anhangabau; Cine Monark on Avenida Brigadeiro Luiz Antonio; Cine Plaza on Praça Marechal Deodoro (I have never seen this one) and Cine Tokyo on Rua São Joaquim that changed its name to Cine Alamo after 1961 (named after the John Wayne movie).

In the suburbs we still had Cine Caxingui, on Estrada de Itapecirica, 8 (later Av. Francisco Morato); Cine Eldorado on Avenida Vital Brasil, 454; Cine Santa Cecília on Rua General Olimpio da Silveira, 215.

6 July 1958 - Vitor Lima's 'De pernas p'ro ar' another Herbert Richers production that would make a lot of money due to Ankito's and Grande Otelo's popularity. Renata Fronzi as the curvaceous dumb broad; Renato Restier as the bad man; Darcy Coria as the 'other woman'; comedians Zeloni, and Costinha doing whatever zany act they can conceive; Wilson Gray might be one of the gangsters who obeys orders from either Restier or Roberto Duval... Emilinha Borba and Cauby Peixoto do the singing accompanied by Severino Araujo & his orchestra.
Grande Otelo & Ankito; show-girl-cum-comedienne Renata Fronzi.
6 July 1958 - Victor Lima's 'Sherlock de araque' is back again at Cine Metro. There was a federal law that obliged cinemas to fulfill a yearly quota of Brazilian cinema content. When the dead-line approached and such cinemas had not yet complied with the quota they hurried up to show whatever Brazilian feature was available. Most of the time they resorted to fims that had already been shown. Carequinha & Fred, two circus clowns lead the cast of the 'usual suspects'... Hamilton Ferreira usually played the bad man at Herbert Richers productions. See rock'n'roller Carlos Imperial and his 'Calypso Rock'.
6 July 1958 - Maria Basaglia's 'O pão que o diabo amassou' with theatre old-timer Jayme Costa and introducing hot new Sao Paulo actor Carlos Zara

O colar acaba caindo nas mãos inocentes de Arrelia, um afinador de pianos, que entra em apuros devido aos vigaristas.
23 November 1958 - Joseph Mankiewicz's production based on Graham Greene's novel 'The quiet American' (O americano tranquilo) with Audie Murphy. According to Wikipedia the film flips the novel on its head, turning a cautionary tale about foreign intervention into anti-communist advocacy of American power. Mankiewicz received uncredited input from CIA officer Edward Lansdale, who was often said to be the actual inspiration for the American character called 'Pyle' in the novel but unnamed in this film - played by Murphy.
