1 9 6 0 - April to June - 'Holiday for lovers' (Amantes em férias)

Sao Paulo made in Hollywood - Jill St.John, Clifton Weber, Jane Wyman & Carol Lenley with a Sao Paulo background photo...
3rd April 1960 - The ad says Cine Marrocos would be closed for 2 days to complete the overhauling of its sound system that had been upgraded in the last few months. It would open again on 6 April 1960 with a brand-new 4 tracks of Stereophonic Magnetic Sound with the avant-premiere of 'Holiday lovers'.

Jill St.John plays Clifton Webb & Jany Wyman's daughter who comes to São Paulo, Brazil and apparently gets involved with Eduardo Barroso (Paul Henreid) but in fact she is in love with his son Carlos (Greek actor Nico Minardos). The story goes on to include Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Madrid and Trinidad.
Before we go any further, tell me: How can you wear those fur overcoats when you're supposed to be flying down to Rio? Or Peru for that matter... It defies any racional thinking.

shooting down in Rio... having a Panair do Brasil plane in the background.
this crowd was supposed to be Brazilian... but anyone who has ever been to Brazil knows this is Hollywood, California.
Carol Lynley celebrates her 17th birthday in Hollywood with the crew on 13 February 1959...
Gary Crosby plays an over-weight balding romantic interest to lovely Carol Lenley.
Gary Crosby keeps playing the only role he (probably) knew: a dead right mongo.
10 April 1960 - a new cinema-house is opened: Cine Lar, on the corner of Av. Brigadeiro Luiz Antonio and rua Cincinato Braga, a block away from Avenida Paulista. Cine Lar would later become an outlet for Arab movies; 'Gül Baba' (Aventuras no Jardim de Allah) is a 1940 Hungarian musical film directed by Kálmán Nádasdy and starring Sándor Kömíves, Zita Szeleczky and Pál Jávor. It was based on the operetta 'Gül Baba' composed by Jenő Huszka with a libretto by Ferenc Martos.
10 April 1960 - Spain's singing sensation Joselito could not do a wrong thing...'Escucha mi canción' (1958) with Luz Marquez was his 4th hit. These were his previous hits:
'El pequeño ruiseñor' (1956), 'Saeta del ruiseñor' (1957) and 'El ruiseñor de las cumbres' (1958).
10 April 1960 - film made in 1955, based on the legend of Brazil's main object of religious faith: Nossa Senhora d'Aparecida (Our Lady of the Appearance) a smallish statue of a Madonna that was fished from the bottom of a river by some fishermen who could not find fish. After they recovered the statue things started picking up for them. They made up a little makeshift chapel for it and from thence wonderous things happened broadening the appeal of such a small object until it became so famous the Vatican decided to bestow a sainthood on it. This flick made a hit in a country that was 95% Catholic then. I remember seeing it in 1960 when I was 11 years old. It actually had 3 different titles: 'Padroeira do Brasil', 'Cavalgada da esperança' and 'Nossa Senhora d'Aparecida'. Child actress Graça Maria made a splash playing the little blind girl who recovers her sight due the intercession of such a powerful Entity.
17 April 1960 - Even though Lola Flores was extremely popular in Spain, she could never compare with Sarita Montiel when it came to being successful in foreign markets. 'La faraona' (Orgulho cigano) was made in 1956 and re-released now maybe to cash in on 'La violetera', Miss Montiel's smash-hit.
17 April 1960 - teen-age heart-throb Fabian stars in 'Hound dog man' (Uma dívida de amor) where he sings a few hits like 'I'm grown up', 'This friendly world', 'Single' etc. Blonde Carol Lynley who plays Fabian's romantic interest was in demand at Fox for she was Gary Crosby's girl-friend in 'Holiday lovers' (Amantes em férias) current film at Cine Marrocos.
28 April 1960 - 'Confidências à meia-noite' (Pillow talk) was probably Doris Day's most popular movie in her new phase... and it had Rock Hudson to boot plus Thelma Ritter. The song 'Pillow talk'  (Buddy Pepper-Inez James) was also a hit on the radio.
22nd May 1960 - another Herbert Richers production, 'Pistoleiro Bossa-Nova' (Rio, abril 1960) with Ankito & Grande Otelo directed by Victor Lima. dismissive OESP columnist finds something praise-worthy in the comedy though quoting previous ouvres by Mr. Lima like 'Espirito de porco' (1957) and 'De pernas p'ro ar' (1956). 'Além da já provada desenvoltura para o gênero da trinca Renata Fronzi-Ankito-Grande Otelo, 'Pistoleiro bossa-nova' conta com excelentes interpretes do 'cinema sério' de S.Paulo, a dançarina Lyris Castellani, Ana Maria Nabuco e, principalmente Aurélio Teixeira, ator consagrado com um Saci conferido por esse jornal ao melhor ator coadjuvante de 1... (?). See young spunky Carlos Lyra sing 'Maria Ninguém'.
                                                          1956                                1957
12 June 1960 - Argentine Libertad Lamarque who made Mexico her home since the 1950s teams up with Miguel Aceves Mejia, Mexico's greatest mariachi in 'Sabras que te quiero' (Saibas que te quero).
19 June 1960 - at Cine Joia, Toho's production ''Gendai no Yokubou' (Ambição) with Ryo Ikebe & Keiko Awaji. On the photo above from left to right: Toshiro Mifune, Yoshiko Kuga, Ken Uehara & Ryo Ikebe.
19 June 1960 - at Cine Art Palacio, Cantinflas is back with 1944's  'Grand Hotel' proving he was still Latin America's King of Comedy;  at Cine Paissandú, Yvonne de Carlo is Mary Madgalen in 'La spada e la croce' (A espada e a cruz), a film she made in Italy in 1958, with an international cast having Jorge Mistral, Rossana Podestà, Mario Girotti (future Terence Hill) etc.

10 June 1960 - Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee in 'The mummy'; Liz Taylor & Monty Clift in 'A place in the sun'; Diana Dors, Britain's answer to US's Marilyn Monroe was in 'Room 43' whose title in Brazil was much more sensational 'Passaporte para a vergonha' (Passport to shame); Gregory Peck & Deborah Kerr in 'Beloved idol' and Brazil's greatest comedian Oscarito in 'Pintando o sete'.
19 June 1960The Mummy is a 1959 British horror film, directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Made for Hammer Film Productions. The film was distributed in the U.S. in 1959 on a double-bill with either the Vincent Price film 'The Bat' or the Universal film 'Curse of the Undead'.
26 June 1960 - at Cine Bandeirantes 'The blob' (A bolha assassina) with Steve McQueen (his name was still spelt Steven); a terrible blob gets bigger and bigger and kills everyone on sight... I could hardly sleep at night after I watched 'A bolha assassina' (they added a terrible adjective to the title: the Murderous Blob) a couple of years later.
